As any tailor will tell you, the farming of cloth is a great way to earn some gold in the World of Warcraft. As tailors practice their profession and advance in skill to Expert level, they soon find themselves requiring large amounts of silk, thus generating demand on the Auction House for this type of cloth. In this short guide I’ll explain how to farm silk and help you turn a few gold coin in the process.21

Silk, like all cloth, is farmed by the grinding of humanoids. Now, if you haven’t yet figured it out yet, the type of cloth dropped (Linen, Wool, Silk etc) by any particular humanoid mob is dependent on the mob’s level. Mobs of between 25-35 tend to drop silk and elite mobs around 34-38 probably are the most consistent.

This means that to farm silk cloth effectively, you’ll have to be at least level 38 and preferably 40. It’s not very efficient to grind mobs 3 or 4 levels above you (their level icon is red), unless you form a group. If your goal is to simply farm, then you must be at least 3-4 levels above any particular mob you wish to grind or have exceptional gear.

Now, while you may find a humanoid mob at the right level, there is no guarantee that they will drop silk at a reasonable rate. It’s no good grinding a mob for hours and only end up with a stack or two. To farm silk effectively you need to find mobs that not only drop silk at a good rate but are also grouped in sufficient numbers, allowing you to grind them efficiently.

Before giving you the location of some good mobs to farm, I want to give you a few final tips on grinding. Not only should you be 3 -4 levels above your mob, but you should also make sure that you have the best gear you can afford. Also, make sure your talent tree is up-to-date. So often, new players forget they have a talent tree and their talents never get updated. Finally, make sure you have a good supply of quality food, flasks and bandages in your backpack. You want to avoid dying at all times!
